But really, social proof includes all of these things and is older than the internet. It’s why you trust the plumber your neighbor recommends.

In the last decade, social proof has changed faces online frequently, from Yelp Reviews and Google Reviews to YouTube sponsorships and Reddit threads. Most recently, social proof and third-party reviews have become a massive influence on how you show up in AI search tools, influencing the AI-generated review summaries that 82% of consumers read before making a purchase.

Social proof is a key resource for getting more leads and sales. When used correctly, social proof helps you win more clients and boost your reputation among your ideal clientele, both online and in your local community.

What is Social Proof in Digital Marketing?

“Social proof” really just means word-of-mouth marketing. Specifically, any statement given by your customers, publicly or with their permission, that describes their experience using your cleaning service counts as social proof.

You can find these descriptions in many different areas: your online reviews, testimonials, word-of-mouth, and user-generated content. You can also ask clients directly for their opinion and whether they’d be willing to share it. All of these are methods of channeling your clients’ thoughts and opinions and turning them into marketing materials for your cleaning business.

Social proof works as a marketing tool because it provides potential customers with validation. If they see other people have enjoyed working with you, they’re much more likely to book your cleaning services. And with 85% of people more likely to use a business after reading positive reviews, those reviews matter.

How to Gather Social Proof and Reviews

There are many ways you can gather social proof or reviews, and we recommend that you automate at least one of these methods so that you always have new reviews coming in. Review recency matters as much as your star rating, which makes sense when you consider staff turnover and other potential changes in your business model that may have affected your service quality.

You can ask for reviews at any stage of your business, whether you have one client or 50, because your existing clients are most likely going to be your biggest advocates. They can significantly impact your marketing strategy if you know how to ask.

If you’re still managing your cleaning business using pen and paper, you may want to consider adding some software to help you manage your reviews before you take on too much.

Option 1: Verbally asking

If you haven’t pushed for or received any reviews yet, start by asking your customers about their experience after you’ve left them a clean, sparkling home. This is when they will most likely feel the value of your work directly.

Either you or your cleaners can develop scripts to memorize how you ask your clients for reviews. This will help with feeling like you don’t know what to say or how to ask, and gives everyone a chance to prepare to ask the question the right way.

Here’s an example script you can use:

“Hi [Name]! We hope you love your clean home today. Do you have 60 seconds? It would mean so much to us if you left us a quick review?”

If they say yes, send them your direct link via email or text message. Some cleaning business owners use QR codes on leave-behind notes.

If they say no, thank them anyway and let it be.

Option 2: Ask everywhere and often

If you’re asking clients verbally and not seeing as many reviews come in as you’d like, try automating your messages with software. Including a request for a review in all of your post-appointment follow-ups is a great way to remind clients about leaving a review more often without being pushy.

Put a review link in your email signature, so that every time you email a client personally, the request goes with your message. Giving clients the option and access to leave a review as many times as possible increases their chances of leaving a review.

Option 3: Ask anyone who has left a service rating

If you already use software to manage service ratings, pull a list of everyone who has returned feedback to you and ask them.

Service ratings are helpful because seeing what clients bring up helps you figure out how to solve issues and attract new clients. But if someone’s left feedback in a service rating, it’s usually a good indication that they’ll be willing to leave you a review as well.

Clients are more likely to feel that their feedback matters when you ask for it privately first. And if you implement solutions based on their feedback, they’ll usually feel appreciated and heard.

Pro tip: Don’t use service ratings as a screening tool. Only asking happy clients is called review gating, and Google’s review policy (as well as others) prohibits it. Ask all of your clients for a review, unless they’re inactive or have left you a review in the past six months.

Share Reviews on Multiple Platforms for Maximum Visibility

Once you have some reviews on sites like Yelp or on your Google Business Profile, use those reviews to show potential customers what they’re missing.

There are four important places to display your reviews:

Your website

Your social media profiles

Your pre-booking client communications

Advertisements, digitally and in print

Sharing your reviews in these places cuts down on the time it will take potential clients to see the reviews and gives them a positive impression of your brand. It’s also a more active approach to marketing to new customers because you’re not waiting for them to search for your reviews.

Identify your most valuable marketing and social media platforms and start incorporating your reviews and testimonials into the content you post on those platforms.

Here’s an example of how Nichole Nelson at Beyond the Dust repurposes her reviews into branded Instagram posts. This is a great strategy to keep your social media calendar full and reinforce to your followers that customers love you:

A five-star review for Beyond the Dust that Nichole reposted on Instagram as branded marketing. The review reads, “Nichole was wonderful to work with! She was able to fit me in quicker than I expected. And the quality of work is simply outstanding! Highly recommend for your cleaning needs.”

In a brief caption, you can thank clients for reviews and give a bit of insight into how these reviews make you feel as a business owner, which Nichole is.

Clients notice when business owners respond to reviews like this, too — 80% of all consumers are more likely to use a business that responds to its reviews. So, don’t be afraid to get a little cheesy!

Adding reviews to your website

Adding your reviews to your website is what closes the loop between your social media marketing campaigns and a booked client. Make sure you have your most recent reviews on your website.

Serene Clean does a great job of highlighting their reviews on their website:

A screenshot of the Serene Clean homepage, where Stephanie and her team are pictured above a moving carousel of five-star reviews on Google. The headline says “When our team feels valued, they deliver service that truly shines.”

The headline introducing this part of the homepage instantly shows how important reviews are to the business: the team reads them and feels valued, which improves the quality of their work. Sharing this sentiment with potential and recurring clients alike helps them remember to leave reviews because they’re meaningful to their cleaners, not just a win for the business.

If a client leaves a particularly glowing review on Google or Yelp, reach out to them and ask if they would be willing to let you feature them on your website. Share how much you value their support as a customer.

The carousel on the Serene Clean website automatically pulls in the newest reviews. Most website builders, like WordPress and Squarespace, have Google Review widgets you can set up on your website to keep things fresh without doing any manual work.

Recency is super important when it comes to social proof. You want people to see that someone used your service in the last couple of days. Old reviews don’t mean anything, but the ones from a week ago are more powerful because it shows that you are still doing a great job now.

Make Video Testimonials — They’re Worth It

AI changes how people search for new businesses in every industry. Cleaning business owners should know that video often plays a role in how visible your business is to AI tools, and investing a bit of time in video testimonials will help you show up in AI searches.

BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey puts YouTube in fourth place on a list of top review sites for this year, just behind Google, Facebook, and Yelp. Their recommendation is to prioritize video as a marketing channel and ask to use your clients’ video clips in your marketing.

If you don’t see any clients leaving video testimonials, it might be a good idea to reach out to clients who have written positive reviews for you already. You can acknowledge their review and ask if they have more to share, or if they’d be willing to record a short video of themselves reading the review out loud.

The good news is that you don’t need a big production budget to make these testimonials work. Clients and review readers appreciate videos that are real, show the quality of your service, and actually share a true experience. Nothing does that better than a homemade video shot on a phone, a little awkward, and totally real.

Use Social Proof to Hire the Best Talent

Lastly, you can use social proof to attract top talent for your cleaning business. When prospective employees see that people love working with you and have great experiences with your business, it tells them that it’s also a great place to work.

Candidates want to feel good about the company they’re applying to, so having social proof on places like your job posts or website can help make your cleaning business more attractive for job seekers.

Consider creating a Careers page on your website that highlights testimonials from both your cleaners and your clients — sharing a positive experience from multiple perspectives is what makes this work, and potential employees will appreciate the transparency.

Final Thoughts

Your happiest clients are already your best marketing. Social proof just gives them a place to say it out loud.

Ask every client, not just the ones you’re sure will be kind. Share the best reviews where people decide whether to book. And keep new ones coming in, because a review from last week does more than one from last year.

ZenMaid makes the asking automatic.
