I am your host, Stephanie from Serene Clean, and today’s very, very special episode is shot right here in Barcelona, Spain. That is right, we are on the 2026 ZenMaid retreat. It has been spectacular. It has been svelte, it has been sweaty. It has been some other fourth S adjective. And these are my friends. These are some of my friends, guys, that I want you to meet. We are going to be seeing some behind the scenes of the ZenMaid team and getting some insider insight that I hope you find highly enjoyable. So I’m going to introduce my friends here, and then we are going to have some really interesting conversations. So starting on my right, we have Jorge. He is the head of customer support. Jorge, tell the people, where are you from and how long have you worked at ZenMaid?

Jorge: Hi everyone, I’m Jorge. I’m from Venezuela. I currently live in Buenos Aires. I’m the head of support at ZenMaid. I’ve been at ZenMaid for around four years now, and I’ve been the head of support for around a year and a half.

Stephanie: And Jorge, if you had to shave your head or your beard, which would you choose?

Jorge: Since I don’t have that much beard anyways, I think that would be safe.

Stephanie: Okay, going beard, good.

Jorge: But I have shaved my head before, and I know I have a nice shaped head.

Stephanie: Oh, that’s a flex. Yeah, exactly. I have a huge dent in my head, you guys. I don’t know if I ever told you that, but I rolled off the bed when I was a baby, and I have a giant crater in my head. So if you guys ever meet me at CleanCon in September, you don’t even have to ask, okay? Don’t even have to ask, just come straight for the dent. Okay, here is my pal, Chris. He is wonderful. He is from California originally. He lives in Cologne, Germany now. And he is part of the developer team, but he’s been at ZenMaid a long time. Chris, what do you do at ZenMaid?

Chris: I’m a developer, I’m a full stack developer. So I’ve worked on mobile, but mostly the web app. You’ll see the celebrations feature, for example. That’s one of the things I worked on.

Stephanie: Hell yeah. And Chris, would you rather shave your head or your beard?

Chris: My beard. I gotta love the hair.

Stephanie: You do have good hair. Great hair, beautiful hair. Okay, good answer. Good answer. Nicole, who you guys have met before — Nicole is one of my work besties, and she is in Boston. And what do you do, Nicole, for ZenMaid?

Nicole: I am a senior content marketing manager. So I basically do everything that’s social media, website, really any type of customer facing content that we’ve got as resources. The podcast, I’m gonna edit myself.

Stephanie: Pretty meta.

Nicole: Really weird. Don’t recommend. So yeah, anything that’s coming out of ZenMaid in terms of resources, content, social media, podcast, everything.

Stephanie: And she just had her one year anniversary.

Nicole: My one year anniversary was literally two days ago. And they got me champagne. It was lovely. It was really nice.

Stephanie: And Nicole, would you rather shave your head or your eyebrows? And you can’t fill it in. You can’t fill your eyebrows in.

Nicole: I would probably say I would shave my head, because I think people without eyebrows look really scary and alien.

Stephanie: No offense to any eyebrowless people.

Nicole: You probably look great. But I think for myself, I would look like I have a five head.

Stephanie: Yeah, no, I get it. I understand. Okay, and last but certainly not least, we have Mr. Jimothy. Jim, he is incredible. He is our designer, guys. And Jim is actually from Greece, and he lives in the Netherlands now with his beautiful family. Jim, how long have you worked with ZenMaid, and what all do you do?

Jim: I think it’s five years, four and a half, something like that, yeah. If I count it in retreats, I’ve been in three or four retreats, but I remember I missed two. So yeah, five years, I think.

Stephanie: Yeah, so it’s amazing. And what do you do for us, Jim?

Jim: Good question. Everything around design. So mainly product design is my focus, everything around the user experience. And then Jo, that is also part of the design team, she’s doing everything around brand, the mascots, and everything around the website.

Balancing Speed, Quality, and AI Features

Stephanie: Yeah, the design calls — I meet with these guys every single week, as well as the rest of the dev team. Every Tuesday morning.

Jim: That could be a podcast by itself.

Stephanie: I know, right? It’s so fun. I love it, for sure. And it means we can move faster on things, which, as we talked about before recording, Chris — people always want us to move faster, and there’s a lot of challenge that goes into moving fast with features, and balancing speed versus it needs to be really good. And I’ve certainly gained a ton of patience and admiration for the developer team. And when new features are maybe taking longer than we as customers would want, I feel a lot more patience just knowing you guys. If my managers are like, “They need to do this, they need to do this,” I’m like, “That’s not going to happen,” because of how much work goes into every single feature, guys. It’s literally insane.

Chris: It is insane, yes.

Stephanie: And even earlier today, Chris and I were working together, and it’s actually been really useful, because Crystal, my director of HR, she has been recording Looms of how she makes schedule changes, with all different scenarios, guys. So it could be somebody called out, somebody quit, we’re hiring somebody, somebody’s availability changed, a client desires a different time. So we’re talking hours of decision-making process. And then you and I just took it, put the transcripts into Claude to understand her workflow. Because then — spoiler — the goal is eventually to feed that into ZenMaid’s AI, so that it can help you guys with your scheduling when you need to reschedule something. And it’s like, you would never be able to do that without cleaning business owners, right?

Chris: Absolutely.

Stephanie: Yeah, like not at all.

Chris: I think for me, the way I see it when it comes to the developing and speed of development, it’s like we have to consider quite a few things. We have to consider the design of it, the feel of it, the opinionated approach, but also the freedom to adapt to your maid service, and the quality that all of the maid service owners that are using our software deserve. ‘Cause we don’t want to ship anything — I mean, albeit developers, and coding is very difficult, so there’s always gonna be bugs — we don’t wanna ship something that we don’t feel is up to quality. And we also want you to be able to run your business your way, but also give you the tools and the ability to have a somewhat opinionated route on how to run your maid service. And like I was saying, with the maid service owners who just started out as single cleaners, having this opinionated approach is super important to have, especially whenever you’re just starting out. So I think these are just a few of the things that we have to consider to make sure that the quality is there, and the care for all the people on our platform.

Stephanie: Yeah, no, for sure. And when it comes to opinionated, it’s like, how much do we push the feature into, this is how you should do this particular aspect of business? And as you guys know, I’m very opinionated. And sometimes they have to be like, no, Stephanie, this works for you, not for every owner. And I’m like, no, this is the right way — anybody who doesn’t do this is dumb. So it’s always a balancing act. But I must say that this has been the best retreat that I’ve been at so far. This is the third retreat I’ve been at. This has been absolutely spectacular. Honestly, the team keeps growing. We just have such wonderful people. I mean, truly, the culture here is incredible. It makes me very inspired for Serene Clean, and gives me a lot of ideas. So it’s a wonderful thing to be a part of.

Favorite Moments from the Retreat

Stephanie: So I just wanna do a quick rapid fire — what’s been your favorite part of the retreat so far? Whether that be here at the villa — because new bombshells have entered the villa — or if it was outside in Barcelona before, during our dev retreat, ’cause we’ve been here for a freaking week already doing dev stuff, ’cause I’m a dev now, guys.

Jorge: We’re all devs now.

Stephanie: Yeah, we’re all devs now, with AI. Thanks, Todd. Favorite moments, guys?

Jorge: Favorite moment, I guess — playing mafia.

Stephanie: You little shit. This little shit, you guys.

Nicole: Don’t trust anyone in this company anymore.

Jorge: It’s all about fun.

Stephanie: Oh, it’s about lying and deceit, is what it is. And I almost won, and he beat me last night.

Jorge: I feel like I have never bonded with people so much through a game that it’s all about lying.

Nicole: Well, Amar is like, we’re gonna bring you to this retreat to build trust with each other, and then we’re gonna destroy it.

Stephanie: If you guys have ever played werewolf or mafia — same thing, same thing. And yeah, it raises your blood pressure, for sure. I agree, mafia is some of my favorite, for sure. Chris?

Chris: I would say for me, it’s actually — I’ve been here for so long, and it’s really cool to see the old faces, but also the new faces. You know, I’ve always seen Nicole’s profile picture on Slack, and I’m like, I only see how she writes, but she is completely different in real life.

Nicole: Am I?

Chris: Yes.

Jorge: You get to see how tall people are.

Stephanie: Yeah, the tall — zoom height. Oh yeah, catering. Matt called out the food.

Nicole: Oh my God, the food is unreal.

Chris: I didn’t think of that. But for me, it’s just meeting the people and getting this bond. So whenever we go back home, and everyone’s working from home and stuff, we’re like, I remember working with Jorge, and — even thanks, catering — having food next to him, delicious food. We’re able to have these awesome memories, and I really get to know the person behind the profile picture that I just stare at.

Stephanie: All day. Yeah, exactly. I completely agree. I mean this in the best of ways — shockingly intimate conversations. And I mean actually going beyond the surface. And when I say to you guys, these are my friends — these are my friends. I have made such deep friendships with people around the world. The fact that we’re all sitting in this room together is fucking insane to me. Our company is literally worldwide. And so I am grateful every day, every single time. And so I have so many favorite memories. The Gothic tour was amazing yesterday — we had an incredible tour guide. I learned so much about Barcelona and the history and the architecture. I absolutely loved it. Yeah, the pool time, the game time, the sessions — vibe coding games was really fun.

Jim: That was a fun session. For me, that was the favorite session, by far.

Stephanie: Oh yeah — so Jim, go ahead, talk about your game.

Jim: Yeah, that session was, for me, super fun. So we did a workshop of, I think it was one and a half, two hours. And the idea was that each of us has to make a game with Claude related to the gaming industry. And it was really fun, ’cause I don’t even remember the last time that I used design and coding for something like fun. Of course, building ZenMaid is fun, but it’s always about strategy and solving problems, and not just delighting — purely delighting somebody, and having fun. And yeah, it was also nostalgic at the same time, because you just kind of look back at all the games that you used to play as a child, and now, with AI, you can recreate them, but with your own twist. So that was one of my favorite workshops, by far. But yeah, the whole retreat — the vibe, the food and people, everything.

Nicole: Some of the games were so different too, which was crazy, ’cause we’re a group of 25, 30 people. So everyone doing one, we’re like, oh, I don’t wanna do one that everyone else is gonna do. And there was literally not a single one that repeated, which was really crazy.

Jim: And for me, with these sessions — it’s a bit off topic — it’s so easy, because in companies, everybody is in a department — like your customer success, support, design, whatever. It’s so easy to think that somebody that is on something, let’s say, operational, or that is not into creating stuff, that they don’t have much creativity. And with this kind of work, I really love that you really see the creative limits.

Stephanie: I was blown away. My mind was fricking blown. Just every single person, it was — yeah. And I mean, for you guys, if you ever wanna blow some steam off, go into Claude and make a game. Make a cleaning game, make it for your staff. I told my managers to go play the game I made, and it might be coming to some part of ZenMaid. We don’t know.

Nicole: Let’s see — this whole thing has been so incredible. This was my first retreat. Well, ironically, when I got hired last year, it was when everyone was in Barcelona. So it just did not — like, that would have been crazy, my first day in Barcelona. Anyway, this is my first retreat. I mean, it’s literally been the best week of my life. I’ve been texting my friends, and I’m like, this is genuinely one of the best weeks I’ve ever had in my entire life. It’s been so much fun. I was so kindly invited to be at the dev retreat a little bit early, just because some of us wanted to adjust to jet lag early. So I was with Stephanie at the dev house, which is where we were. Also, shout out to the venue that we’re at, Masia Notari.

Stephanie: Yeah, we’ll hopefully do a little tour later. So check the socials for that.

Nicole: Before we came here to Masia Notari, we were at a big place in Barcelona properly — like a big apartment. There were like 10, 12, 15 of us who were all there. And I introduced them to Telestrations, which is a game, if you aren’t familiar — it’s basically like telephone, but with drawing. So I brought the after dark version, and we got so close with each other so quickly. We were just giggling for hours — like, literally crying laughing for hours and hours, and late into the night. And then we would play if we had time during the day. And that was my favorite part. Everyone was so happy and just silly and funny, and it was amazing.

Bring Team Bonding Back to Your Cleaning Business

Stephanie: Yeah. And just for you guys — obviously, this conversation is a lot of just us being grateful, us talking about a lot of things. But in your own businesses — trust me, I cannot take my entire team to another country for a week. That’s not something that is possible, or will ever most likely be in the cards, for Serene Clean. But I really want to emphasize the importance of team bonding. We all work remotely. Your cleaners are also a version of remote workers. And so anything that you can do to allow this bonding time, even in small blurbs — ’cause we run individual cleaners, we don’t run teams, they very rarely work together — anything that you can do to make culture happen, and that’s just getting them in the same dang room. Don’t even talk about work, right? Just have fun, get to know each other, and be there for each other, and care about each other. It just does so much. And we’re just gonna be so excited to continue working together. So take that to your cleaning companies. I know I will continue to do that at Serene Clean. And not that I like to say nice things about Amar, but thank you, Amar, for doing this. Like, genuinely.

Nicole: He’s not even listening.

Stephanie: Yeah, he’s not even fucking listening, so that’s fine. Always omnipresent Amar. But it’s like, yeah — I don’t take it for granted that we are all sitting here in this room, and it just makes me so appreciative. And I just want all of you guys, all future ZenMaid customers and all that are watching right now — we are working incredibly hard. We just talked about a lot of fun, but we are working so hard to make this the best damn scheduling software that you can possibly have.
