How ZenMaid and Debbie Sardone’s Cleaning Business Fundamentals course changed this maid service owner’s life and helped her build a 6 figure maid service!
Mindy DeShields started cleaning houses when she was just 16 years old (that’s what happens when your mother is a House Cleaner)!
Years later, despite earning her business degree, she was “flying by the seat of her pants” with no systems or processes in place. Though she was no longer cleaning homes solo, Mindy was still cleaning full time.
And she might have continued that way…
That was until she found out her first child was on the way. And just like that, her priorities changed overnight. All of a sudden her business, Green Cleaning KY, wasn’t really a business – it was a job that was going to take her away from raising her child. That’s when Mindy decided to make the switch from self-employed to business owner.
But as she grew her business she began to find the administration details taxing and overwhelming. In her words:
“As I hired more employees I grew tired and confused making out paper schedules with excel every month.”
That’s when she discovered both ZenMaid and Debbie Sardone’s Cleaning Business Fundamentals course.
And with their powers combined Mindy changed her business forever.
Revenue from her maid service tripled (and then some)… This began the first of many 6 figure years. She’s continuously pushing her comfort zone, growing as a person and as a business owner, and her business is on track to do over $200k annually.
Not only that – Mindy now has the systems and processes in place to spend quality time with her children while enjoying her business (and of course, her life).
Here’s the full Q&A with Mindy:
Amar G: Tell us a little about yourself, Mindy.
Mindy D: Sure! I am from and grew up in Murray, KY. My mother was a house cleaner so she could be at home to care for my dad who had cancer; he passed away when I was 11. (This is one of the reason’s I’m a part of Cleaning for a Reason).
I started cleaning houses when I was 16 (2004), and always cleaned on the side, even while working full time jobs and attending school.
Amar G: Oh wow – so you’ve been in the industry since you were 16?
Mindy D: Not quite – that’s just when I first started cleaning houses – but I attended and graduated from Murray State University with a BS degree in Agriculture Business in ’09.
When I married, I was working in retail (2012), cleaning on the side and working at home for a transcription company. After we had our first child, my husband and I decided I should clean part time to be able to stay at home more. Part-time cleaning turned into full time and the referrals kept coming in, so in October 2015, I decided to turn my cleaning gig into a business.
Amar G: Ah, a classic maid tale. So what were your challenges early on in the journey? Did you struggle to go from being a solo cleaner to managing a team?
Mindy D: As I hired more employees I grew tired and confused making out paper schedules with excel every month. Also, I was pregnant and so you know how that goes!
[Note from Amar: no, I do not know how being pregnant goes.]
Amar G: Anything else?
Mindy D: I wasn’t aware of it at the time but I was worried about little things within the business and scheduling that weren’t necessary for me to do. In hindsight, it seems obvious but at the time I didn’t even realize!
Amar G: Is that when you discovered ZenMaid?
Mindy D: Debbie found me first! (Or I found her, whichever way you want to put it.)
An acquaintance who owned a commercial cleaning business in another city mentioned Debbie Sardone to me, and after viewing her website I already knew I had to take the course.
What I LOVED about contacting her for the first time is that I immediately got to talk to Debbie!
I’m pretty sure it was her direct cell phone that I called. She answered and we scheduled a consult. She recorded, I let my husband listen and we were both like, “if we don’t do this it would be a huge mistake!”
Amar G: And how did that work out for you?
Mindy D: There’s no way I’d be where I’m at without Cleaning Business Fundamentals. CBF gave me direction, it taught me how to get out of being the cleaner, and actually running my business. It gave me the confidence to charge what I’m worth and how to market! Obviously my business is not perfect, and I’m still implementing changes taught in CBF, but at least now I have direction.
Amar G: That’s amazing – Debbie’s essentially a GPS for your business. Did her help cause you any other issues that caught you off guard?
Mindy D: You know the answer to that question! With great growth comes great responsibility – I mentioned before that as I hired more employees I grew tired and confused making out paper schedules with excel every month. Plus I was pregnant at the time!
Amar G: *crosses fingers* – so this is when you discovered ZenMaid?
Mindy D: Exactly! I know I ran across ZenMaid early on in the course through the group Facebook posts. I didn’t jump on board until I hired more people and couldn’t handle the scheduling by hand. I started Debbie’s course in May 2017 and then started using ZenMaid that December.
Amar G: How has ZenMaid helped you to manage your growth?
Mindy D: It’s making everything less overwhelming and sustainable! ZenMaid made it super easy to get started by uploading my contacts for me, and I have an automated schedule that I don’t have to worry over.
It also solves the problem of a client forgetting we’re coming with the auto text and emails.
Amar G: What’s next for Mindy and Green Cleaning KY?
Mindy D: I started my cleaning business with the intention to be able to stay at home one day and provide enough income so we weren’t struggling. In that time I’m now making what I was working full-time. We have 50 or so clients doing $100,000 or more in sales.
My short-term goal is to have 100 clients, get an office and office staff, and be able to take a VACATION! I’d like to be the biggest cleaning business in our area. The long-term goal is 300 clients!
I want to build a thriving business that one day I can either sell or pass down to my children. None of this would be possible without Debbie’s CBF course and ZenMaid!
